THE HISTORY OF AROMATHERAPY

While plants and plant extracts have been used empirically for thousands of years (evidence of this can be found in India, Pakistan, Iran, China and Ancient Egypt), it was not until 1830, in Grasse, France a city of perfume-makers and a venerated centre of distillation, that the study of essential oils came into being. Very quickly, some of the leading scientists of the time, such as Louis Pasteur, took an interest in it. From as early as 1887, Charles Chamberland, disciple and assistant to Pasteur, began scientifically measuring the antiseptic effects of oregano, clove and cinnamon essential oils on anthrax...

Then, in 1910, René-Maurice Gattefossé, a chemical engineer from Lyon, discovered the therapeutic properties of pure lavender after an explosion in his laboratory, which left him with major burns. He treated them using lavender essential oil. Won over by that “miracle", he founded the French Society of Aromatic Products and published around twenty works that are still considered references today. These works would give aromatherapy its reputation and its very name, as it was Gattefossé who coined the term “aromatherapy”, in 1935.

HOW CAN ESSENTIAL OILS HELP?

They can help with almost everything, thanks to their amazing diversity and recognised efficacy... Essential oils have more than 10,000 known aromatic components, which explains why their therapeutic arsenal is so extremely varied and extensively developed. It is also why essential oils can soothe anything from a sore throat to a stomach ache, skin or urinary tract infection, sleep disorder or digestive problems... and much more! Furthermore, while each essential oil has a main component with “key” quality, it also offers many more. These are due to the significant or minor molecules found in each one (lavender, for example, contains over a thousand!). For instance, some essential oils can kill bacteria, viruses, dust mites, fungi, insects, etc., all at the same time. By contrast, the standard medication contains no more than one or two active molecules and is therefore aimed at a specific pathology or symptom. Combined, these essential oils, which are already effective on their own, perform even more powerfully in synergy with others.

REFLEXOLOGY

Reflexology rests on the ancient Chinese belief in qi (pronounced “chee”), or “vital energy.” According to this belief, qi flows through each person. When a person feels stressed, their body blocks qi. This can cause an imbalance in the body that leads to illness. Reflexology aims to keep qi flowing through the body, keeping it balanced and disease free. In Chinese medicine, different body parts correspond with different pressure points on the body. Reflexologists use maps of these points in the feet, hands, and ears to determine where they should apply pressure.

Reflexology is a non-invasive complementary health therapy that can be effective in promoting deep relaxation and well-being; reducing stress in people’s lives can be key in optimising good health and building resilience. It is a touch therapy that is based on the theory that different points on the feet, lower leg, hands, face or ears correspond with different areas of the body and reflexologists work these points and areas.
